Technology Burns My A**

Yeah, yeah I know–at my age, I’m obsolete, similar to an 8 track tape or a mimeograph machine. My tech-savvy skill set would fit in a thimble. (Ha! You probably don’t even know what that is, do ya?) Just when it seems like everything in my home is working, either something stops working or becomes outdated and needs replacing. Case in point: TV Remotes.

It took me months to figure out how to use the four remotes, but I think I’ve finally mastered it.

Remote #1: Cable TV

Remote#2: Smart TV

Remote#3: Roku stick (Netflix, etc.)

Remote #4: Sound Bar (sound is notoriously poor on Smart TV, I’ve heard. Also, some family members whisper behind my back–yeah, I can hear you!–that I have a hearing loss. I have intermittently plugged ears, people! Bad allergies. Anyway, the sound bar helps.

So here’s the sequence I’ve learned, the hard way:

  1. Turn on Smart TV and quickly choose source 1,2, or 3. (1 is HDM1 for cable, 2 is HDM2 for streaming services Netflix, Hulu, etc. Now I don’t remember; is there an HDM3?)
  2. If cable, quickly turn Remote 1 power on, then Guide. Choose your show. If source 2, select the streaming service you want on either the Smart TV or Roku remote. Choose your show.
  3. Turn on remote #4, make sure to press “Bluetooth” button, too. A blue light will show on the sound bar. If you forget this step, you might think you are losing your hearing; if in doubt, read the manual.

To be honest, even though this blog is fun to write, WordPress has changed a great deal since I wrote my old blog, “Odds&Ends from Ermigal” ten years ago. It takes me longer than I thought it would to write even a short column. Guess I’ll have to bite the bullet and take some of their courses.

Rats!

  2. Boy, could I relate to this blog, Ermine! You’re braver than me…I gave up trying to figure it all out…I mostly watch movies with my DVD player. Thanks for the chuckles on this one.

Jim, at least you have some younger folks in your orbit to guide you. Why not try again? In fact, I have a film strip projector from my teaching days if you want it–lots of interesting film strips with it: science experiments, American history, some classics like Tom Sawyer, too! Let me know.
      Thanks for your feedback!

I have one that adjust the speakers to compensate for my old ears! But we don’t have to get out of our chair, so there’s that!

Nancy, that sounds like it would be tricky to master! And it’s true, we don’t have to get up to change anything, just chair-surf. Maybe I won’t kvetch about it anymore!

I try to put all my stuff (now that’s a great tech term, Ermine) on one universal remote and always fail miserably!

Wow–that sounds tricky, Mark. Keep at it, though–good for the brain cells. Thanks for reading!

You should be proud to even attempt navigating so many of those suckers! One is plenty for me. Oh, and I am beginning to realize that Mr. M needs the volume UP more than I do. And I’m the one with tinnitus!

  7. I totally agree! I am still using Classic View and if they make me learn the newest version I will probably have to either quit blogging or take a year off to learn how to blog all over again. Ahhhhhh!

Hi Diane, Thanks for your feedback and understanding. I’m in awe of your ability to post on a regular basis, but tired from holidays, having Covid, then the flu. Do you have a way to stay motivated? I wanna kvetch , but lost my
      focus. All suggestions are welcome!
